Shelf Reflection’s Reading Challenge for Kids 2025
Shelf Reflection’s Reading Challenge for Kids [2025]
By: Shelf Reflection
I’ve been doing reading challenges for several years and always have a lot of fun doing them. This year, my 8-year old saw me working on the graphics for my 2025 challenge and was interested in what I was doing. She loooooves reading and asked to do the challenge.
That gave me the idea to make a KIDS reading challenge. My daughter helped me come up with the prompts. They’re not that different from the adult version but just a little more simplified to make sure they can easily find books to go with them.
Kids won’t have social media accounts to track anything so I made a bunch of PRINTABLES (linked below).
There are a variety of trackers including a checklist, a bookshelf tracker they can color, and reading journal options. This can be their way of keeping track of what they read, summarizing the book, and writing down what they liked and didn’t like about the book— the main parts of a book review!
Some of the versions have a blank book where they can draw a picture of the book cover, character, or scene from each book to go along with their other observations.
If you want, it may be fun to create little prizes for finishing part or all of the challenge. You could also have them arrange the prompts in THIS 5x5 Bingo board and award prizes for bingos.
Here are some fun bookish prizes you might consider:
Fun magnetic bookmarks (these are flowery, but there are more boyish options too)
DIY diamond dot bookmarks (we did this for my daughter’s birthday party)
Reading stickers for a water bottle (or anything else…)
Harry-Potter themed ‘I solemnly swear to read more books’ pouch
Fun bookish shirt (I don’t have a ton of kids’ options on my shop, but you’re welcome to browse)
Or just a good old-fashioned Amazon gift card to buy more books!
Hopefully this can be another way to get kids excited about reading! Let me know if your kids end up doing it. This is a little bit of an experiment to see if these reading challenges translate well to the kids’ level or not.
